In a 5-4 vote that was followed by tension and drama, Matt Appelbaum was narrowly elected mayor of Boulder this morning.
Lisa Morzel was named deputy mayor, also in a 5-4 vote.
The City Council made the decisions shortly after swearing in its two newest members — Tim Plass and Suzanne Jones. Also sworn into office were re-elected incumbents Morzel, Ken Wilson and George Karakehian.
Four council members were jockeying for the title of mayor: Morzel, KC Becker, Suzy Ageton and Appelbaum.
