Investigators from a multiagency team that includes the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were hoping Tuesday to start digging into the cause of the blaze that caused more than $1 million in damage to the historic St. Malo Retreat Center.

Boulder County sheriff’s Cmdr. Rick Brough said the sheriff’s office will serve as the lead investigative agency with assistance from the Allenspark Fire Department, but the ATF brings important resources to the investigation.

“They’re very skilled investigators,” Brough said.

At this time, there is no indication that Monday’s fire was suspicious, Brough said. High winds knocked out power recently to the retreat center off Colorado 7 near Allenspark, and workers there had been using a fireplace for heat.
