The Colorado Mammoth on Friday signed defenseman Dan Coates to a one-year contract and forward Brandon McMillen to a two-year contract.

Coates was the eighth overall selection in the 2011 National Lacrosse League draft after his college career at Canisius College. McMillen was fifth in total points (57) in the Ontario Lacrosse Association Senior B Division this past season.

DU’s Scott signs four basketball players.

University of Denver men’s basketball coach Joe Scott announced the signing of four players, including Nate Engesser of Colorado Springs Christian, a 6-foot-3 guard who was the 3A player of the year last season.

The other three are Jalen Love, a 6-2 guard from Wichita East High, who averaged 12 points and six assists last season; Bryant Rucker, a 6-foot guard from Frisco (Texas) Centennial who led his team to a 21-9 record last season; and Dom Samac, a 6-8 forward/center from Zagreb, Croatia, who helped lead North Broward (Fla.) Prep to a 20-7 record last season.

Steffan leads CSU over Air Force.

Newly crowned Mountain West player of the year Katelyn Steffan had 11 kills to lead No. 1 seed Colorado State to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-10) win over No. 8 seed Air Force in the conference volleyball tournament quarterfinals in Albuquerque.

• Jodi Purdy had 13 kills to pace fourth-seeded Wyoming to a 3-1 (25-23, 27-25, 20-25, 25-21) win over No. 5 seed New Mexico.

Evans-led Mines advances to elite eight.

The Colorado Mines women’s soccer team made Anna Evans’ goal in the seventh minute stand up, defeating Fort Lewis 1-0 in Golden to advance to the elite eight of the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Evans got her tally off a chip from Megan Woodworth, and Evans one-touched her shot into the far post. The eighth-ranked Orediggers host two-time defending national champion and top-ranked Grand Valley State on Sunday at 1 p.m. at CSM Soccer Stadium.

• The Orediggers volleyball team wasn’t able to spring another upset at the NCAA Central Region Tournament in Kearney, Neb., losing 3-1 (22-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-17) to No. 9-ranked Southwest Minnesota State.
