SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Sarah Long is in a new home, in a new town with new parents she calls “Uncle Dad” and “Uncle Mom.” And though she is just 6, she knows exactly how it all happened.

On March 1 in Burlington, just west of the Kansas border, Sarah’s 12-year- old brother shot and killed their parents, Charles and Marilyn. He then attacked her and her brother, Ethan, then 9.

“They died,” the 6-year-old said matter-of-factly. “My brother killed them. He also hurt me and Ethan. I don’t know why he did that. Now he’s in prison. I think it’s good he’s in prison, because he won’t touch us ever again.”

Sarah and Ethan live with Charles’ brother Wally and his wife, Sylvia Long.
