Xcel Energy, which serves about 1.4 million Colorado customers, is seeking an electricity rate increase of $142 million — raising the average residential bill by 4 percent or up to $4 a month.
Xcel filed its request with the Colorado Public Utilities Commission today and is seeking to have the rate hike in place by Dec. 23.
The utilities commission is likely to defer a decision so as to provide time for a public hearing, so Xcel is also asking for an interim $100 million increase, said Mark Stutz, a spokesman for Xcel.
“Since our last electric rate case, we have added more than $750 million of investment in Colorado to meet our customers’ needs,” David Eves, chief executive officer of Colorado Public Service Co., an Xcel subsidiary.
