FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Fort Collins police say an officer shot and wounded a man when he reached for a handgun tucked in the waistband of his pants. The weapon found after Friday’s shooting downtown turned out to be a gun replica that shoots plastic pellets.

Police spokesman Matt Johnson Sunday says nine-year department veteran Michael Crosland ordered 41-year-old Scott Mendias of Fort Collins to keep his hands off of what Crosland thought was a handgun. Johnson says Crosland shot Mendias in the abdomen when he reached for the gun replica.

Mendias is on routine, paid administrative leave.

Police did not release on update on Mendias’ condition.
