Next to the constellation of “Nutcracker” productions twinkling along the Front Range, few things set a traditional holiday mood better than the Colorado Symphony Orchestra’s annual “Colorado Christmas” program.

The show always offers something more engaging than straight-up orchestral performances — witness the 2010 shows’ inclusion of Kim Robards Dance Company — and this year the CSO is bringing back the Colorado Symphony Chorus and Colorado Children’s Chorale to bolster the mix of musical classics, including “O Come All Ye Faithful, selections from Handel’s “Messiah,” Tchaikovsky’s “Trepak” and “Sleigh Ride.”

And yes: Singing along is encouraged.

“Pretty much the whole concert is geared toward family,” marketing director Samantha Teter said of the shows.

That explains why Santa not only shows up during the main event, but gets there an hour and a half early for photos in the lobby before the matinee performances.
