The Rockies today acquired left-handed pitcher Nick Schmidt from San Diego, completing the trade that sent right-handed pitcher Huston Street to the Padres.

Schmidt, 26, was the Padres’ 2007 first-round pick. He split the 2011 season between High-A Lake Elsinore and on a rehab assignment with rookie level Arizona Padres in the San Diego organization. Between those two stops he combined to go 3-5 with a 3.84 ERA (63.1 ip, 27 er), 23 walks and 58 strikeouts in 12 starts.

Schmidt was originally selected by the Padres as the 23rd overall pick of the 2007 first-year draft out of the University of Arkansas. In parts of four minor league seasons — he missed the 2008 season due to injury — Schmidt is 16-24 with a 4.61 ERA, with 125 walks and 246 strikeouts in 65 games (61 starts).

The St. Louis native has surrendered just 18 home runs in 275.1 career professional innings pitched.
