A 22-year-old father in Colorado Springs is facing first-degree murder charges in the death of his 8-month-old daughter, police said today.
The infant, Elise Martinez-Mosley, died at about 1 a.m. today at Memorial Hospital.
“The child suffered significant head trauma, which was found to be non-accidental in nature,” the Colorado Springs Police Department stated.
Nicholas Patrick Smith is being held without bond. The murder charge against him alleges “extreme indifference,” court records state.
He was initially charged with felony child abuse after the injured child was reported to authorities Tuesday afternoon, but the charges were upgraded after her death, police said.
Other than traffic offenses, Smith’s only other criminal record is a misdemeanor assault charge in Colorado Springs that was dismissed in 2009, court records show.
