TIMIKA, Indonesia—Two Indonesian workers were shot to death in an attack near Freeport-McMoRan’s gold and copper mine.

Freeport Indonesia spokesman Ramdani Sirait said the victims were employees of a contractor who were by car near the mining town of Tembagapura.

Sirait says initial reports indicate that gunmen fired on the vehicle. Police were not immediately available for comment on Monday’s attack.

The mine in restive Papua province is run by a subsidiary of the Phoenix-based Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc.

It has been hit with arson, roadside attacks and blockades since operations began in the 1970s.
