Six people in Aurora were taken to a local hospital this morning to be treated for smoke inhalation.
The fire broke out at about 1 a.m. in a two-story apartment building at 102 Kenton St., said Capt. Allen Robnett, an Aurora Fire Department spokesman.
When firefighters arrived heavy smoke and flames were visible and the building’s residents had fled their apartments, Robnett said.
Firefighters got the blaze under control in about 15 minutes. The building, however, sustained heavy fire and smoke damage and the floors are dangerously unstable.
The people taken to the hospital were treated and released.
The American Red Cross is helping residents of five units who have been displaced by the fire with clothing, food and care kits.
The apartment complex has five vacant units and the residents will be able to move into those apartments, the Red Cross said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
