The University of Denver gymnastics team lost its third straight competition against a ranked opponent, falling to host No. 22 Missouri by one-tenth of a point Friday, 194.725-194.625. DU, ranked No. 16, previously lost to No. 1 Nebraska and No. 6 Georgia (current rankings).
The Pioneers’ Melodie Pulgarin Linero won the all-around with 38.900 points, one-tenth of a point better than teammate Simona Castro, who earlier this month made history by becoming the first female gymnast from Chile to qualify for the Olympics. Castro will compete in the all-around in London.
CU, DU still chasing Utes. Rune Oedegaard won the men’s 10-kilometer classical nordic race at Devil’s Thumb Ranch in Tabernash to help the University of Colorado ski team remain in second place through six of eight events at the Denver Invitational.
Utah had three podium finishes in two races to extend its lead from 27 after the alpine portion of the meet to 72 points. The Utes have 694 points to the Buffaloes’ 622. Host DU is in third place with 570 points.
Utah’s Parker Tyler won the women’s 5K classical, edging DU’s Katie Dolan by four seconds.
Grant does it again for Mammoth. John Grant Jr. scored the tying and game-winning goals late in the fourth quarter to lift the Colorado Mammoth (2-0) to a 13-12 win over the Rush in Edmonton.
Rapids complete trade. The Rapids made a trade with the Vancouver Whitecaps, acquiring allocation money in exchange for the club’s natural second-round Major League Soccer SuperDraft pick in 2014 and an international roster spot for the next three seasons.
“Bang” bopped. Iowa MMA fighter Josh Neer used a high-elbow guillotine chokehold to defeat Denver’s Duane “Bang” Ludwig by first-round submission in a nationally televised UFC bout in Nashville, Tenn. Ludwig (21-12) landed a series of punches to Neer’s chest early in the bout and seemed to be in control. But Neer (33-10-1) wrestled Ludwig to the ground and got the submission at 3:04.
