FOUNTAIN, Colo.—The family of a man who died while rescuing a dog from an icy pond in Fountain says he always did what he thought was the right thing.

Forty-five-year-old William Tuttle managed to toss the pit bull to shore before he slipped beneath the surface when the ice broke Saturday. He later died. Nephew Ruben Lovern tells the Gazette Tuttle had just gotten the dog and was taking it for a walk. He is survived by two daughters.

Fountain Fire Chief Darin Anstine says so far this year, the department has handled 25 calls of people venturing onto ice in the city. Signs at the lakes in an area north of Fountain Creek Regional Park warn of thin ice.
