LONGMONT, Colo.—Public health officials have ordered more testing after several Longmont High School students tested positive for the tuberculosis bacteria.
Officials will test about 140 more students who shared just one class with a student who first tested positive for the disease earlier this month.
According to the Longmont Times-Call ( ), doctors said a test of about 13 students and five staff members turned up more positive tests than expected, but they refused to say how many.
Tuberculosis is caused by bacteria spread from person to person through the air. TB usually affects the lungs, and can lead to symptoms such as chest pain and coughing up blood. The disease is easily treated by antibiotics, but can be fatal.
