SAN DIEGO — Kyle Stanley overpowered Torrey Pines and opened a five-shot lead Saturday at the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open.

Stanley missed a 4-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole that would have set the 54-hole tournament record. He settled for a 4-under-par 68, a spot in the record book with Tiger Woods and in great position as he goes after his first tour win today.

He was at 18-under 198, matching the record set by Woods in 1998. John Huh, a PGA Tour rookie out of Q-school, also had a 68 and was at 13-under 203, along with John Rollins.

FedEx Cup champion Bill Haas (70) and Sang-Moon Bae (72) were another shot behind. Bae was 5-over through five holes until he ran off four straight birdies to start the back nine to get his name back on the leaderboard.

Bears name Emery new GM

LAKE FOREST, Ill. — The Chicago Bears hired Kansas City Chiefs director of college scouting Phil Emery as their new general manager.

Emery was an area scout for the Bears from 1998-2004 and replaces Jerry Angelo, who was fired after an 8-8 season.

Emery has one mandate from president Ted Phillips: Close the talent gap with Green Bay and Detroit in the NFC North. Another criterion was to be able to work well with coach Lovie Smith, an area where Emery was thought to have the edge because of his previous ties with the Bears.

San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith, who had 14 sacks this season as a rookie, was charged with driving under the influence in Miami.
