SAN DIEGO — Brandt Snedeker won the Farmers Insurance Open on Sunday in a playoff not even he thought was possible until Kyle Stanley hit a wedge into the water and made triple-bogey 8 on the 72nd hole.

Snedeker had a tap-in birdie on the 18th and was so certain he would be the runner-up that he drove up to the media center for an interview, just in time to see Stanley run into trouble.

Both players made birdie on the 18th in the playoff, then Snedeker won on the second extra hole, the par-3 16th, with a 5-foot par putt. Stanley’s putt from about the same length caught the right side of the lip.

It was a devastating loss for Stanley, who led by seven shots in the round, and was four shots ahead as he stood on the 17th green before imploding on No. 18.

“It’s not a hard golf hole,” said Stanley, his eyes glassy and his lips quivering as he tried to answer questions. “I could probably play it a thousand times and never make an 8.”

Snedeker shot a final-round 67 and Stanley shot a 74 as both players finished at 16-under 272. John Rollins (71) finished third, and Bill Haas (72) and Cameron Tringale (71) tied for fourth.

U.S. women beat Canada in CONCACAF final

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Abby Wambach and Alex Morgan scored two goals apiece, and the U.S. women’s soccer team beat Canada 4-0 in the championship game of the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament.

Wambach scored in the 24th and 28th minutes to push her total to 131 international goals, one ahead of longtime U.S. captain Kristine Lilly and into second place on the career list. The 31-year-old forward trails only Mia Hamm at 158.

The game was for bragging rights among neighboring rivals. The U.S. and Canada wrapped up berths in the London Olympics by winning their semifinal games Friday.

Boatright family is considering legal options

HARTFORD, Conn. — A lawyer representing the mother of Connecticut guard Ryan Boatright said the family is considering legal options after the NCAA detailed its investigation into the freshman’s eligibility.

The NCAA has cleared Boatright to play, but said Saturday he and his mother had accepted more than $8,000 in impermissible benefits from at least two people. Attorney Scott Tompsett issued a statement calling the NCAA’s news release false and misleading.

Allmendinger’s team wins

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — NASCAR driver AJ Allmendinger earned his first major victory in almost six years by closing out the Rolex 24 at Daytona for Michael Shank Racing.

Allmendinger drove the final stint in the No. 60 Ford Riley, spending almost three hours behind the wheel at the end of the twice-around-the-clock endurance race. His team included IndyCar driver Justin Wilson and Grand-Am regulars Ozz Negri Jr. and John Pew.

Ryan Dalziel was at the wheel for Starworks Motorsports’ second-place finish, and Felipe Nasar was driving for Shank when he crossed the line in third.

Footnotes. Dallas Mavericks guard Jason Kidd will be out at least a week because of a strained right calf.

Thick fog forced organizers to cancel a men’s super-G World Cup race in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.
