BROOMFIELD, Colo.—The Federal Aviation Administration has dedicated a new $23.7 million air traffic control tower at Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport in Broomfield.
The FAA says the new tower has the latest radar and communications technology, better airfield views and a little more room.
The 124-foot tower replaces one built in 1966 that was 74 feet tall with a 400-square-foot cab to hold air traffic controllers. The new tower has a 525-square-foot cab. The new tower was designed to withstand up to 110 mph winds and a magnitude 9.0 earthquake.
Air traffic controllers at the airport handled 110,509 takeoffs and landings last year.
Hensel Phelps Construction Co. of Greeley had the construction contract for the new tower.
