A goal from forward Quincy Amarikwa gave the Rapids a 1-0 victory Tuesday over Chivas USA in a Major League Soccer preseason scrimmage at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
Amarikwa replaced Omar Cummings in the 61st minute and took a cross on the back post from Steven Emory to punch in the goal in the 85th minute.
Mines on the move. The Colorado Mines men’s basketball team moved up one slot to No. 4 in this week’s National Association of Basketball Coaches Division II top-25 poll. It’s the highest ranking in school history for the Orediggers (19-2, 15-2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference).
The Metro State men’s team is ranked No. 11. The Roadrunners (18-4, 13-4) lost 72-67 to Colorado Mines in Denver on Monday night.
Fort Lewis (18-2, 15-1) rose from No. 7 to No. 6 in the USA Today/ESPN Women’s Basketball Coaches Division II top-25 poll.
The Metro State women’s team fell five slots, from No. 3 to No. 8, after the Roadrunners (19-2, 15-2) lost 80-64 to Colorado Christian on Saturday. Metro State had won 26 consecutive home games.
DU projected to shine in lacrosse. The University of Denver men’s lacrosse team was picked to repeat as Eastern College Athletic Conference champion in a preseason poll of league coaches.
The Pioneers swept the ECAC’s major preseason awards. Senior attackman Mark Matthews was named preseason offensive player of the year, sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Faus preseason defensive player of the year, freshman midfielder Wes Berg preseason rookie of the year and junior Chase Carraro preseason specialist of the year.
Matthews had 45 goals and 24 assists last year, helping the Pioneers advance to the Final Four.
DU’s season opener is Feb. 19 against Ohio State at the Lacrosse Classic in Jacksonville, Fla.
