WALSH, Colo.—Residents of about 30 homes in Walsh are back in their homes following an ammonia spill.

A tank holding about 1,000 gallons of anhydrous ammonia fell off a trailer as it was being hauled to a farm on Wednesday. The fall ruptured the tank and winds sent ammonia vapor over the town. The evacuations were in place for about four hours. Residents were allowed back after workers plugged the hole in the tank and moved it to a safe location.

About 700 people live in the town in Colorado’s southeastern corner.

Anhydrous ammonia is used as a fertilizer. Riley Frazee, a spokesman with the Colorado Division of Emergency Management, says it’s common to see tanks of it being hauled around the ranching and farming community.

No injuries were reported.
