COLORADO SPRINGS — American pairs skaters and the winner’s podium at international events haven’t exactly gotten along in recent years. Maybe Sunday’s 2-3 finish at the ISU Four Continents Championships at World Arena marks a turning point for brighter times ahead.
Broadmoor Skating Club’s Caydee Denney and John Coughlin, along with comrades Mary Beth Marley and Rockne Brubaker, maintained their positions with season-best scores in the free skate, marking the first time since 2000 that U.S. pairs have claimed two medals at the Four Continents competition.
“We are trying to take a stand and be a world power as far as pairs goes,” said Brubaker, who formerly trained in Colorado Springs and now makes his training base at All Year Figure Skating Club in Culver City, Calif. “This is a good start. Before we went to the ice, I saw the American flags in the crowd. It is good for us to have a few teams toward the top.”
