A woman found dead in her Denver home late Sunday morning may have succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning from a generator inside the house, authorities said.

Shortly after 11 a.m., the Denver Fire Department responded to a 911 emergency call in the 2600 block of Pontiac Street and found the woman. The level of carbon monoxide in the house was 260 parts per million, far above the acceptable level of 35 parts per million, said DFD Lt. Phil Champagne.

He added that witnesses said the utilities in the home had been turned off for nonpayment and DFD responders found no electricity. The woman appeared to be using the gas generator to power space heaters.

Authorities didn’t identify the woman Sunday night.

“It appears that nothing was suspicious about the death other than the use of a generator may have had some effect or played a role in the death,” said Denver police spokesman John White. “But we don’t know for sure it was carbon monoxide.”
