DENVER—A Denver Civil Service Commission panel has overturned the firing of a police detective who was accused of lying about failing to follow a tip about a hit-and-run crash.

KMGH-TV in Denver reports ( ) Jay Estrada is being reinstated with back pay and seniority, after having been fired in June for allegedly committing a deceptive act. Commission hearing officers found that former Manager of Safety Charles Garcia didn’t prove Estrada committed a willfully deceptive act.

Current Denver Manager of Safety Alex Martinez says he will seek an appeal.

Estrada’s dismissal stemmed from his work on a crash in 2010, when an SUV struck a pregnant woman, who later lost her baby.
