KIOWA, Colo.—A semitrailer driver who troopers say drove about 11 miles in the wrong direction on Interstate 70 before causing a deadly, head-on crash near Limon (LY’-mun) has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.
Thirty-four-year-old Jason Ross received the maximum sentence Tuesday. He pleaded guilty in November to 10 counts, including vehicular homicide and driving under the influence on the night of Dec. 26, 2010.
Prosecutors say Ross had spent that afternoon drinking before he started driving west on eastbound I-70 near Limon that night. Other drivers called authorities, and a police officer with lights and siren on tried unsuccessfully to get Ross to pull over before Ross crashed head on into another vehicle.
The crash killed 71-year-old Martin Hernandez of Lamar and injured Hernandez’s wife and granddaughter.
