Firefighters rescued two children who fell into an icy pond at 51st Avenue and Tower Road.
Lt. Phil Champagne, a spokesman for the fire department, said an underwater rescue team was dispatched, but since they are located near downtown, it would take the crew about 30 minutes to arrive.
Champagne said a firefighter was able to break ice on the pond, and used a backboard — which is also designed to float — to pull both boys up to safety.
The pond was about 5 feet deep, just barely over the boys’ head.
The boys were a little hypothermic, but were doing fine, Champagne said.
The boys were transported to a hospital as a precaution.
Champagne said the boys were playing on the ice pond — near the Green Valley Ranch Recreation Center — when the ice broke beneath them and they fell in.
Their ages or names have not been released.
