COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—El Paso County commissioners have moved to change oil and gas regulations that they recently approved, following concerns from state officials.
Colorado officials had argued that a provision commissioners approved last month regarding water-quality monitoring near drilling operations could conflict with state rules.
The Gazette reports ( ) county commissioners voted Tuesday to pass a resolution requiring drillers to perform an initial, baseline water-quality test and, after drilling is completed, one follow-up test between one and three years later. For the six drilling permits Houston-based Ultra Resources has already applied for with the state, two follow-up tests would be required over six years after drilling is finished. However the resolution also directs county staff to pursue an intergovernmental agreement with the state to transfer the water-quality monitoring to the state level.
