COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—The Colorado Springs Utilities board is putting plans on hold to buy 50 megawatts of wind power this year, with board members saying it’s too expensive for customers.

The Gazette reports ( ) that adding the renewable power was expected to have increased average utility bills by 1 to 2 percent.

Board member Angela Dougan said Wednesday it’s not something Colorado Springs Utilities can do to its ratepayers right now.

State law requires larger municipal utilities to generate 10 percent of its power from renewable sources by 2020. Colorado Springs Utilities is on pace to reach the goal.
