A bus driver has been charged in the death of a 50-year-old man who fell under the rear wheels of the bus as it pulled away.
Tadese, Asefaw, 35, has been charged with careless driving resulting in death, according to a news release from the Denver District Attorney’s office.
Asefaw is an employee of Veolia Transportation. On Feb. 7, he was under contract with RTD when he was driving the Route 16 bus.
Asefaw was driving eastbound on Colfax Avenue when he made a stop at Mariposa around 11:45 a.m.
Mario Castro allegedly got off the bus at the Mariposa stop, where he placed his right hand on the side of the bus to steady himself. Asefaw pulled forward and caused Castro to lose his balance and fall under the back wheels of the bus.
Castro died several hours later.
Asefaw was served a summons and is scheduled to appear at 10 a.m. on March 19 in Denver County Courtroom 4C to be formally advised of the charge against him.
