DENVER—A bus driver working for a private contractor has been charged in the death of a man crushed by the rear wheels of a bus.

Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey has formally charged Tadese Asefaw with careless driving resulting in death. Prosecutors say 60-year-old Mario Castro had gotten off the bus Feb. 7 but still had his right hand on the vehicle to steady himself as Asefaw pulled away. Castro fell under the wheels and died several hours later.

Asefaw has been served a summons and was ordered to appear in Denver County court on March 19.

Asefaw was employed by Veolia Transportation, which is a contractor for the Regional Transportation District. Veolia said Tuesday that safety is a top priority and expressed sympathy for Castro’s family.
