Human remains, bones that have been in place for about 25 years, were found at a Commerce City work site.
The discovery happened Friday on the west side of Suncor Energy property, according to Mike Saunders, a Commerce City Police Department spokesman.
Workers at the property were doing “hydro-excavation” work, moving earth with high pressure hoses, when they uncovered human bones, said Suncor spokeswoman Brandy Radey.
The energy company called police about the discovery and the Adams County Coroner’s Office is in possession of the remains.
“They are still digging at the location,” trying to determine if any more remains are there, said Lana Lombardi, a coroner’s office spokeswoman.
Suncor officials have been told that the bones are about 25 years old. The Coroner’s Office said in a news release that the bones had been there for “quite some time” and for forenic purposes had been classified as having been there less than 50 years. The bones were of one person, the office said.
“You never know what you are going to find underground here,” Radey said.
Meanwhile, the coroner’s office will begin doing DNA and other testing on the remains in hope of eventually determining an identity, Lombardi said.
“It will take some time,” she said.
