Denver Police officers and crews with the Denver Department of Public Works, cleared trash and abandoned items from Civic Center this morning.

Early this morning, police received a report of someone setting up a tent on the east side of the park, where Occupy Denver protesters often hold marches and demonstrations, said Lt. James Henning.

When officers arrived they found a disassembled tent, but noticed a large amount of trash and unsanitary conditions.

About 25 people sleep on the sidewalk along Broadway, between Colfax and 14th avenues each night. During the past few weeks, police have received several phone calls from pedestrians complaining that it is difficult to maneuver around the sleeping bags and tarps on the sidewalk, Henning said.

This morning, officers and crews with Public Works cleared trash and abandoned items off the sidewalk and threw them into a nearby trash truck.

“Anything that is abandoned, it has to go in the trash because we don’t know who it belongs to,” Henning said.

Crews try to clear the site of trash every few weeks.

People who were at the park when crews arrived, peacefully moved their items off of the sidewalk and waited for crews to clear the trash.

Homeless outreach officers, who visit the site almost every day, were also at the park to offer assistance and information.
