GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo.—The Garfield Re-2 school board has voted to switch to a four-day school week for students starting in August.
The board voted 4-1 Tuesday to accept the plan for students to attend class four days per week, for longer hours each day.
The Post Independent reports () the school board will decide later this spring on details including which days students will attend class.
District officials estimate savings of $500,000 annually by switching to a four-day school week because of reduced costs for nearly 200 non-teaching staff and savings on transportation, food services and utilities.
Superintendent Susan Birdsey says other Colorado school districts that have shifted to a four-day week report savings of between 1.5 and 2 percent of total district spending.
