LOVELAND – — One of Northern Colorado’s most iconic buildings — the grandstand at the abandoned Cloverleaf Kennel Club — likely will be flattened late next week marking the end of a $1.2 million demolition process that began last summer.
It’s been a trying nine months for the contractor and the project manager, tasked with one of the biggest and most complex asbestos removal processes in the region’s recent history.
The piece-by-piece demolition of the clubhouse’s interior, and the outbuildings that included the dog kennels that surrounded the grandstand, meant new discoveries and surprises — not always of the best kind.
“Every time we would take down one wall, we would find something else underneath that had been built over during remodeling work,” said Jim Niemczyk, project manager for McWhinney.
