NIWOT — Niwot High School was evacuated just after noon Friday after students and staff reported a strange smell that caused some to cough, according to school and fire officials.

Paramedics checked out about 20 students and staff at the school. Most of the reported symptoms were sore throats and irritated eyes, officials said. Students were given bottled water. One staff member used the water to rinse out his eyes.

Chris Allard, spokeswoman for Mountain View Fire and Rescue, said early reports indicate that pepper spray might have been released into the school’s ventilation system.
