SCHLADMING, Austria — Vail’s Lindsey Vonn finished short of an alpine ski World Cup points record when she lost a ski pole on the second run of the women’s giant slalom and finished without any points in the season’s last race Sunday.
Germany’s Viktoria Rebensburg secured the giant slalom title for the second successive season with victory in a combined time of 2 minutes, 27.24 seconds for the two runs.
Vonn, who had already clinched the overall World Cup title and set a women’s points record Saturday, was unable to beat the men’s record of 2,000 points set by Austria’s Hermann Maier in 2000.
She needed to finish 12th or better to set the all-time points record, but trailed in 24th among the 25 finishers, after losing a pole in the rubber matting at the start, which made it difficult to keep her balance on the steep sections.
“I have never lost a pole in my life and I have been skiing since I was 2 years old,” Vonn said. “Obviously I am disappointed. These 2,000 points will have to wait until next year. But I am very proud of what I did achieve this season.”
Vonn’s teammate Julia Mancuso, who was fifth, also had a consistent season and finished fourth overall.
