COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—The Colorado Springs City Council has approved a proposal on first reading to install 10 video surveillance cameras downtown.

The Gazette reports ( ) the proposal will be up for a second reading and final approval in two weeks.

The police department wants to primarily place the cameras along the Tejon Street corridor. Supporters of the camera plan say the cameras will make downtown safer. Opponents are concerned about infringing on people’s civil liberties and the cost.

Installing the cameras will cost roughly an estimated $160,000, while annual maintenance costs are expected to be about $25,000.

Also Tuesday, the City Council supported increasing police overtime for the downtown area by $25,000 in 2012.
