The Colorado Water Garden Society presents “Get Wet: Water Gardening Fun in 2012!” from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Activities include an audiovisual program on waterlily hybrids, “Exciting New Developments in Waterlily Hybridization,” with Tamara Kilbane, Denver Botanic Gardens senior horticulturist in charge of the aquatic collection. She will share details on two waterlily competitions that will be held at the garden this summer for the first time in several years. A sale of aquatic plants and information from local pond and garden centers is also featured. Free; use the “After Hours” group entrance. Mitchell Hall, Denver Botanic Gardens, 1007 York St., 303-843-9619, colowatergardensociety.org
Does turf make you testy? Or are you a lawn lover who’d rather create splendor in the grass than just about anything else?
Our unscientific online poll asked, “What would you rather do than lawn care?” And as of noon Friday, about a quarter of you had answered, “Nothing — I love my lawn.” Of course, nearly half would rather drink beer. A little over a tenth would rather weed a vegetable or flower garden. About 8 percent would rather be breaking rocks in the hot sun. (Hopefully, followed by drinking a beer.) But only about 8 percent of you would rather have a root canal. Our survey was inspired by one from Consumer Reports, whose slacker’s guide to lawn care says there’s only one must: Keep that mower blade sharp.
