Looking to capitalize on Colorado’s cycling fever in August, Salida is debuting the Vuelta a Salida, 50-mile and 100-mile races scheduled two days before the start of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge in Durango.
The 100-mile race Aug. 18 hopes to attract 1,000 cyclists who will pedal round-trip from downtown Salida, along U.S. 285, U.S. 24 and a network of rural Chaffee County roads, gaining 4,700 vertical feet.
The 50-mile race gains 2,200 vertical feet.
Vuelta a Salida organizer Rob Quinn said $15 of every $90 registration fee will go to local charities — including Salida Racing, the local high school mountain bike team.
The Vuelta a Salida, if it draws 1,000 riders, could bring $1 million in economic impact in Salida, said Quinn, the president of Denver’s Spectrum Marketing.
