KIOWA, Colo.—The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is trying to find out, why Elbert County Sheriff Shayne Heap was paid more than $12,000 for unused vacation time he saved up during his years of work in the department.
According to the Denver Post () the amount appears to be more than four times a limit set by county policy.
State investigators met with a county commissioner last week to discuss the payment. CBI assistant director Steve Johnson says there will be a thorough probe into whether crimes were committed.
Heap did not return a phone call seeking comment.
