Better known as USB, it is one of the most valuable ports on a computer. Thumb drives, laptop modem cards and external peripherals are often plugged into the USB port. USB 3.0, the latest version used on Windows-based machines, also referred to as SuperSpeed USB, provides data transfer rates of up to 5 gigabits per second, or roughly 10 times the rate of USB 2.0. Apple has chosen to go with a competing ultrafast connection technology called Thunderbolt, which can also be used for peripherals such as monitors. Thunderbolt offers transfer speeds of up to two times faster than USB 3.0.
