COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—First Presbyterian Church in downtown Colorado Springs is set to officially vote Sunday on whether to split from its denomination and align with a new, more conservative organization.

The church’s leaders voted in January to leave the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), which voted in 2011 to allow openly gay ministers to be ordained.

In an informal vote in March, the general church membership supported efforts to leave the denomination.

The Gazette reports ( ) the church of nearly 4,000 members will decide Sunday whether to join the conservative Evangelical Covenant Order of Presbyterians. For the vote to be valid, one-third of church members must vote, and 80 percent must favor the split.

The church’s regional governing body, the Pueblo Presbytery, would then vote. If approved, a split likely wouldn’t happen until June.
