Lemon Sponge Cake goes “Scarlet”

Saturday-Sunday. Many of Colorado’s most daring choreographers aren’t household names, but in the case of Robert Sher-Machherndl, it isn’t for lack of trying. The Austrian native and founder of Boulder’s tiny Lemon Sponge Cake Contemporary Ballet has presented some of the most risk-taking pieces in Colorado dance since starting his company in 2004 — to great effect. Sher-Machherndl’s work is by turns angular, aching, modern and sharp, but always driven by a deep love and understanding of movement as language, and it’s been lauded internationally. He premieres his latest work, “Scarlet,” this weekend at Boulder’s Dairy Center for the Arts, his first performance there in five years. 8 p.m. Saturday (gala fundraiser) and 2 p.m. Sunday. 2590 Walnut St. $24-$100. 303-444-7328 or
