SALIDA, Colo.—Volunteers are expected to fan out along the Arkansas River on Saturday in an effort to gather trash that has become trapped in the grass and bushes along the river’s banks.

The annual Arkansas River Cleanup will begin at 8:30 a.m. and continue until 3:30 p.m. along the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area in Salida. Organizers say that each year more than 200 volunteers pick up more than a ton of garbage, which ranges from sofas to soda bottles.

The cleanup is sponsored by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, the Bureau of Land Management, the Greater Arkansas River Nature Association and the U.S. Forest Service.
