Make way for music.

The Montbello Drumline prepped Denver’s 16th Street Mall for an upcoming music festival during the lunch hour Tuesday, drumming through the streets of downtown.

Tuesday’s event was a set-up for Make Music Denver on June 21, a day-long festival that celebrates World Music Day simultaneously in more than 450 cities worldwide.

The drumline stepped off at 17th and Champa streets and made a stop at the Denver Pavilions before marching down the center median of the mall for performances at Writer’s Square and Skyline Park.

Performing since 2004, the award-winning Montbello Drumline is directed by Ed Chance. The drumline has performed for events such as the Democratic National Convention, Minority Enterprises annual banquet, DPS Gala, Museo de las Americas gala and the Denver Sports banquet and for people such as the mayor, governor and Kareem Abdul Jabar.

On June 21, Denver becomes a backdrop of for a day professional and amateur performance. It’s based on , a national musical holiday inaugurated in 1982.

Make Music Denver is a day-long celebration of music performed in businesses, venues, restaurants, bars and outdoor spaces in downtown. also includes at least 11 chances for amateur musicians to join in group gigs — sheet music will be provided — in Skyline Park, including “Krowd of Kazoos,” “Drums in Droves” and a “Union of Ukeleles.”
