ASPEN, Colo.—A Littleton woman’s effort to honor environmentalist and “Rocky Mountain High” singer John Denver by naming a peak after him in the central Rockies close to where he penned the song appears to have stalled.
Lou Yost, executive secretary for the U.S. Board of Geographic Names, tells The Aspen Times ( ) the board never received a petition and application from the initiative’s organizer, J.P. McDaniel. He says he spoke with her last year but hasn’t heard from her since.
McDaniel was preparing last July to send an application to the board, along with nearly 3,000 names on a petition in support of naming the eastern, unnamed peak of Mount Sopris west of Aspen after Denver, who was killed in a California plane crash in 1997.
The newspaper reports McDaniel has not returned messages left on her cellphone this week.
