Holes by Louis Sachar (Random House Children’s Books)
Louis Sachar’s -winning novel about a boy falsely accused of a crime, is the choice for the inaugural , a citywide summer reading program for children between 9 and 13.
The book by Texas-based was chosen by young readers, who voted for “Holes” over the other candidates, by and by .
“I’m going to read this book,” Denver Mayor told about 60 children from the city’s Congress Park summer recreation program.
He promised to host a “Holes” book discussion later this summer for 20 young readers who will share their thoughts over banana splits at the mayor’s house.
Approximately 1,200 copies of “Holes” will be distributed to children through the city parks and recreation department summer programs and other organizations.
Events associated with include a showing of the based on Sachar’s novel, on Saturday at , 31st Ave. and Curtis St.
Cynics may wonder how many children will see the movie and skip the book, and literary locavores will note that, like the adult One Book One Denver program, the youth version eschewed Colorado authors.
Ginger White, who oversees Create Denver, an economic development initiative, sidestepped questions about the latter by noting that the candidates for the adult version of 2012 One Book One Denver all have Colorado ties.
The three candidates for the adult program include Denver author novel ‘s nonfiction book about six families who lived through the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl drought that stretched from Colorado to the Texas Panhandle; and Colorado State University alumna ‘s based on a newspaper series about a Honduran boy’s effort to reunite with his immigrant mother.
