BOULDER, Colo.—An environmental policy group says the amount of water required annually to develop new oil and gas wells in Colorado could supply up to 79,000 households in the state for a year, based on average residential use.

A report issued Wednesday by Western Resource Advocates says that when reuse of water is factored in at the residential level, the water used by the oil and gas industry could serve up to 118,400 Colorado homes.

Colorado Oil and Gas Association President Tisha Schuller tells the Daily Camera ( ) the industry’s water use is miniscule compared to all water consumption in the state. The association estimates the industry will use 6.5 trillion gallons this year, which it says is less than 1 percent of total water use in Colorado.
