
Tradition — even one that dates back to 1932 — takes a back seat when wildfires are raging and conditions are tinder-dry.
Until things improve, municipalities throughout Colorado have banned fireworks, campfires and shooting. So instead of signaling the start of the Central City Flower Girls presentation with a blast of dynamite, remotely detonated from a point overlooking the former mining town, the 2012 festivities began with the recorded sound of a big ka-boom.
The Flower Girl ceremony is part of the Central City Opera’s opening night. This year, 14 young ladies who have just finished their junior year in high school — Bailey Abernathy, Jordan Appel, Bridget Barker, Lillian Cogdal, Kathryn Eliot, Haeley Hutchison, Paige Kerman, Meghan MacDonald, Caitlin McCann, Maeve Moynihan, Sydney Rohlwing, Julia Secor, Kathryn Semple and Molly Struna — were introduced by J.
