THORNTON, Colo.—A driver accused of striking three pedestrians while allegedly using his mobile phone has been charged with careless driving resulting in death.

The Adams County district attorney’s office said Monday that 33-year-old Michael Grennan was charged with two counts of careless driving resulting in death and one count of careless driving resulting in injury.

Prosecutors say witnesses reported Grennan was using his phone around noon March 31 when he veered off 168th Avenue in Thornton, striking three males walking on the shoulder. Two of the pedestrians died instantly. The other was taken to a hospital.

Grennan’s wife has disputed allegations that her husband was on the phone before the accident.

Residents say it’s unusual to see people walking in the area where the accident happened.
