CRAIG, Colo.—A Moffat County commissioner who helped pass a resolution banning open fires in the county is apologizing for burning trash at his home.
Tom Gray voted for the resolution June 29, as drought conditions raised the potential for destructive wildfires. The Craig Daily Press reports () that on July 5, a firefighter investigating a report of smoke found Gray was burning trash in an incinerator at his home.
Sheriff Tim Jantz says deputies didn’t cite Gray because the resolution against open fires only allows for penalties if the fire moves and causes property damage or personal injury.
Gray has apologized for the fire. He has said it rained July 5, that his incinerator was contained, and that he had cleared the area around the incinerator of any potential fuels.
