Crews on Sunday will start a resurfacing project for one of the most beatup stretches of highway in the Denver-metro area, Colfax Avenue between Cole Boulevard and Simms Street.

The 1.5-mile stretch of Colfax was last paved in 1995 and now is hampered by widespread cracking, said Colorado Department of Transportation Pavement Manager Bob Mero.

This “is currently one of the worst stretches of pavement in the Denver metro area,” Mero said. “Over the years, our maintenance crews have performed a variety of activities to keep the roadway serviceable, but this resurfacing project will greatly improve the overall condition and driver surface of the roadway.”

Rather than reconstruct or rehabilitate the roadway, crews will remove two inches of existing asphalt and replace it with 2.5 inches of new asphalt, which will extend the life of the roadway by about 10 years, says CDOT.

Throughout the project, motorists can expect various single lane closures on eastbound and westbound Colfax Avenue from 7 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. Access to residences and businesses will remain open during construction and temporary access points will be provided and signed when necessary, CDOT said.

Martin Marietta Materials is the contractor for this $1.1 million project scheduled to be completed by the end of October.
